Mombasa International Moi Airport refurbishment has begun

Interrupted by the Coronavirus outbreak last year, the delayed refurbishment of Kenya's Moi International Airport in Mombasa has finally begun, with authorities preparing to complete by the end of next month.

The design of the project involves the replacement of current airfield ground lighting systems and all approach lighting masts from steel to fiberglass. The improved pavements would have a sustainable maintenance regime to maintain the runway and apron in good shape over a 20-year life cycle and to ensure that the land at the airport is not compromised or lost as a result of unstable terrain. It will also contribute to the green ranking of the airport by rainwater harvesting.

According to the Kenya Airport Authority (KAA), acting Managing Director, Mr. Alex Gitari, this project will ensure that all airport pavements have secure aircraft operations and avoid operational delays and disturbances caused by inadequate airfield lighting.

In related news, the repair of the Kitale Airstrip, which faced mild challenges as a result of COVID-19 disruption, is expected to be completed by December of this year. This is according to Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, who spoke during an inspection tour of the ongoing project.

The scope of the project involves the development of a standard 2.2km runway capable of complying with code 2B Aircraft and the construction of a management block consisting of a VIP lounge.

Upon completion of the project and subsequent resumption of flights, domestic air travelers to the western area who had to use the Eldoret and Kisumu airports would save up to one hour while flying directly to Kitale.

According to Cs Wamalwa, the airstrip is one of President Uhuru Kenyatta's flagship projects in the area that will go a long way towards improving flight connectivity within the county and the wider region.
