Work Progresses on Tanzania's Landmark $112 Million Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan Stadium
Construction of Tanzania's US$112 million Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan Stadium in Arusha is making significant progress, with the landmark sports infrastructure project reported to be approximately 70–75% complete as preparations intensify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Tanzania will co-host alongside Kenya and Uganda.
The 30,000-seat stadium, being constructed by China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG), is one of Tanzania's flagship infrastructure investments aimed at strengthening the country's sports facilities while supporting long-term urban development. Construction began in April 2024 following the signing of a US$112 million engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract.
Built on a 14.57-hectare site in Arusha, the modern stadium is being developed to meet FIFA and Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards. The facility will feature VIP hospitality areas, corporate suites, office space, conference halls, a museum, commercial facilities and supporting infrastructure, allowing it to operate as a year-round multi-purpose venue beyond football matches.
The project is expected to be completed by late 2026, positioning Tanzania to host AFCON 2027 fixtures while creating a new landmark for the tourism-rich city of Arusha. In addition to enhancing the country's sporting infrastructure, the development is anticipated to generate employment opportunities during construction, stimulate local businesses and support wider infrastructure growth across the region.
As construction progresses, the stadium is emerging as a key component of Tanzania's broader infrastructure programme, reflecting the government's commitment to delivering world-class sporting facilities and strengthening the country's capacity to host major international events.
