Construction on Tanzania's Mbamba Bay Port, a much-anticipated project on Lake Nyasa in the Ruvuma region, has officially started. The project is estimated to cost 80.85 billion TSH. The entire amount will also pay for the expenditures of the consultant and the contractor. It is anticipated to be completed in the span of one year.

Anova Consulting Company Ltd and Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) held a formal occasion for the project's handover at the construction site recently. The event was attended and watched by a number of leaders and stakeholders in the transportation sector.

Manager of TPA's Lake Nyasa Ports, Mr. Manga Gassaya, said it was time for them to carry out the project while speaking to those in attendance on behalf of the Director General. He stated that the Mbamba Bay Port project will be undertaken by China's Xiamen Ongoing Construction Group Co Ltd.

The port is anticipated to serve as Lake Nyasa Port's new headquarters when it is finished. Additionally, it will provide a crucial connection between Tanzania and Malawi and Zambia, two of its neighbors. Along with many other goods produced by the people living along the shore of Lake Nyasa and the Southern Highlands Regions, these countries are major markets for food products.

According to Mr. Gassaya's statements at the end of 2023, Mbamba Bay will be the biggest port on Lake Nyasa. He continued by saying that the port's yearly cargo handling capacity will likewise rise significantly, from the current 35,000 tonnes to 320,000 tonnes.
