Malawi seeks to add18MW to its power production capacity

Malawi’s electricity generation company EGENCO, earlier this week signed a multimillion dolar deal with Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation aimed at increasing its power production capacity.  Part of the plan will be to increase expansion of the Tedzani hydropower station.

Reports show that the project has received a $52 million grant from the Government of Japan through Japan International Cooperation Agency which is aimed at improving the country’s electricity generation capacity.

The chief executive officer of EGENCO, William Liabunya, speaking at a ceremony said this project will greatly increase the country’s power generation capacity.

Liabunya also said that this is a very big milestone for EGENCO and indeed a big milestone for the country at large because once the project is complete; it will significantly increase the country’s generation capacity. This project, upon completion will make an additional 18MW into the national generation system.

The project is set to commence in October this year and is expected to be completed within a period of three years. Liabunya further explained that the18MW is no mean achievement to the nation. The project is expected to be completed at least before the end 2020.

This means that the 18MW will be coming into the system soon after Nkula A brings in additional 12MW next year through the rehabilitation, modernization and expansion project currently under operation through financing from the Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact Funding.

Masato Kume, the acting general manager of international economic corporation of Mitsubishi Corporation, in a statement, acknowledged that they will construct 18MW of hydropower station at Tedzani by the end of December 2020. Together with their Exclusive subcontractor, Calik Energy they have a vast experience especially in the Middle East region. This is their very first project in Africa and they are set out to make it an absolute success against all odds.
